Alternative gift ideas for new babies and parents

Updated: Aug 28, 2020

Do you feel stuck in a rut with regards gifts to give new parents? Let's chat about some alternative options you might like to try!

People are always so generous when it comes to gifting a new baby. Each time we had a baby I couldn’t get over it. Friends of my parents, neighbours: everyone was so generous. The arrival of a newborn is just such fantastic news and everyone wants to celebrate with you.

I don’t know about you but I had lots of stuff bought for baby in advance including clothes etc and then we always got gifted so many beautiful clothes as well. So I thought it would be nice to have some ideas of “alternative” presents you could look at for both babies and new mums & dads.

For Baby

Meminio memory boxes are honestly my favourite gift ever. My brother got them for both Harper and Indie and they then very kindly gifted us one for Romy in a beautiful duck egg blue. Check them out here - a really special gift for a really special baby that you can get personalised as well. They are also on instagram so be sure to give them a follow for inspiration.

They have also very kindly given me a discount code to share with my followers.. it’s drlaura for 10% off.

For something else different how about a gorgeous playmat from Gus and Beau - non toxic, easy to clean and made to last. And stylish to boot! Check them out here to purchase or on instagram here

Maxmademedoit personalised letter prints. Honestly I could buy their whole range. They also have lovely prints for little kids birthdays. They also have gorgeous "spring in bloom" prints from this weird year that would look fab in any house!

I think books are such a gorgeous present to get, as you don't tend to purchase many before baby is born . I still remember each book we received and who it was from. Plus you can write the Childs name and a little message at the front and have it for years to come. Here are some of our favourites... you can shop them on my amazon page here. (affiliate link)

A Kiss Like This, Mary Murphy

The Hungry Caterpillar, Eric Carl

Paper Dolls, Julia Donaldson (the girls favourite)

Dear Zoo, Rod Campbell

Wherever You are, My love will find you, Nancy Tillman (my absolute fave, read excerpts at the girls christenings)

On the night you were born, Nancy Tillman (another fave)

Love you Forever, Robert Munsch (I cry every time I read this one)

Each Peach Pear Plum, Allan Ahlberg

We’re going on a bear hunt, Michael Rosen

Guess How Much I Love you, Sam McBratney

Goodnight Moon, Margaret Wise Brown

Any of the “Thats not my..” Series

Any of Julia Donaldson books

Sleeping bags for baby are a great option as well, not something everyone will have purchase before hand but dead handy. We have been using the ergopouch ones available here and on my amazon store (affiliate link).

The Sleepyhead is one of my favourite things and a great present for new mums and dads! Or if you know they have bought one themselves you could get the toy arch to go with it. Romy now lies happily in the sleepyhead laughing and smiling to herself looking up at the toy arch! hours of entertainment. You can see their full range here. do gorgeous gift hampers for your little ones with a variety of gifts in them - check them out here. You can pick and choose from a pink or blue set and spend from €39.95 to €99.95 on the ultimate box.

We are big fans of Miffy as well and I think the night light is another gorgeous gift that will look good in any nursery. You can buy it here @kidly

Lucy and Walter Muslin cloths are fabulous as well - nice big size, super handy to have. Check them out here and its always lovely to support small Irish brands. I actually don't think you can ever have enough muslin cloths, and these extra large ones are good for changing, using for a picnic, as a blanket!

One can never have enough bibs and I honestly don’t think you can get better than babyboo ones - an Irish company with a lovely selection of items. They do gorgeous sleep suits and cardigans as well so well worth checking out.

If you really do want to give clothes I have a couple of tips!

- Think about buying bigger sizes as most new parents will have lots of newborn clothes purchased.

- Go gender neutral if you aren’t sure.

- Think about the age of baby and season it will be! If you are going to be buying 6-9 month stuff and they will be 6 months in January don’t buy them summer clothes!! (Lots don’t think of this!)

- I always love to receive practical clothes sets - Marks and Spencer’s & Next do great packs and honestly you can never have enough.

- I really love the Kip & Co sleep suits from Lou and Belle. We got a few for Romy this time and they are so soft and wear so well. Check them out here

For Mum

Otiumberg name bracelet - I have these for all of the girls (just waiting on Romy to be delivered) such a lovely present. One mum will cherish forever. Check them out here (Tip sign up to their mailing list for 10% off).I've shared a picture of mine over on the grid.

Otiumberg birth stone rings - they actually have a selection of items that you can have with babies birth stones - such a gorgeous idea. I have the bamboo ring options for the girls birthstones on order and I can’t wait to show you. Check them out here

Aurum and Grey have a selection of amazing items that can be personalised and again anyone would love and cherish forever. Check them out here. I think the Connect Necklace is my fav, or the Mama bracelet.

Glitznpeices are an Irish brand that I also love and do beaded name bracelets - I have a mama one, a cute little gift - check it out here.

Loverubyross bracelets Baby name bracelet are adorable as well and UK based.

Spa voucher for mum to go and enjoy some alone time. A lot of places often have nice postnatal packages!

It might be nice to do up a little box of treats for mum with some of her favourite skincare products or products that are easy to use & quick now that baby might be taking up a lot of time!

Ross’ suggestions for the dads (and mums too)

AirPods for when you need to rock baby to sleep or if walking with baby. Helpful during the night as well if you want to listen to podcasts when breastfeeding. Ross actually uses his all the time

Ergobaby embrace carrier - ross uses this all the time and allows him to deal with baby when I want to sleep - find it here in my “baby stuff” list on my amazon store (affiliate link).

Practical gifts

One thing I always appreciated after any of my babies were born was help with the basic things! In those early few weeks it’s hard to even cook so sending some vouchers or freshly prepared meals / frozen foods is great. Even a home cooked lasagna you cook yourself & drop on the door is such q welcome treat.

If cooking isn’t for you there are lots of options now online to get food delivered:

Bia At Home vouchers

Bujoburger At Home

A kindle can be a great gift for mums and dads to keep them entertained during the inevitable middle of the night feedings or how about a subscription to Netflix or amazon prime - especially if its their first baby as they might actually have time to enjoy it!

A voucher for a photo printing service like to get photos printed of those first few weeks - its often hard to find the time to even think about it!

Do you have any hints or suggestions for good presents? What did you love receiving? Let us know over on the instagram post.

Thanks, Dr Laura x
