#12DaysOfDrLaura - Day 5 The sun is not your friend

Did you know that the sun is responsible for 90% of fine lines? This makes sunscreen the ultimate ingredient for younger-looking skin. Use an SPF 30 or higher daily.

Make sure your sunscreen has both UVA and UVB protection. UVA (A for ageing) rays cause wrinkles, fine lines, age spots / pigmentation and dull looking skin. UVB ( B for burn) rays cause sun burn and are more associated with skin cancers such as malignant melanomas and basal and squamous cell carcinomas - but UVA rays have also been implicated.

There are 2 different types of sun protection - physical and chemical. Physical SPFS (ingredients such as titanium dioxide and zinc oxide) have active ingredients the actually physically reflect UVA and UVB rays away from the skin. Chemical SPFs (look out for ingredients like avobenzone and oxybenzone) convert UV rays into heat which is then released from the skin. You need to choose the right sunscreen for your skin type. For combination or oily skin prone to breakouts I would recommend chemical SPFs because of their light texture. For dry or sensitive skin, physical sun filters are more suitable.

I’ve talked about SPF before on my stories before (you can look back on highlights) and have continually tried to stress the importance of it. There is no point implementing a skincare routine (like we have already gone through) especially if you are tackling ageing or pigmentation concerns if you don’t wear SPF during the day. It basically negates all your hard work the rest of the time.

SPF should be applied as the final step in your routine after all your other creams and before makeup.

I have listed some of my favourite sunscreens below at a variety of price points:

IMAGE SKINCARE Prevention Daily Matte Moisturiser Oil Free Spf 32 - physical protection, oil free, goes on really easily

Paulas Choice SUPER-LIGHT WRINKLE DEFENSE SPF 30 - physical protection with light tint, love this at the minute

Skinceuticals UltraFacial UV Defense SPF 50 - physical protection, good makeup base, no white tint, non comedogenic so suitable for oily/ acne prone skin.

CeraVe Hyaluronic Acid Face Moisturiser SPF 25, love this super affordable, zinc oxide but really small particles, non comedogenic also has ceramides + niacinamide

Heliocare Advanced SPF 50 Gel, oil free, suitable for all skin types, non comedogenic + water resistant (so great for holidays).

Do you use SPF already? Did you know what the sun can do to your skin? If not let me know if you are going to change your skincare routine!
